Mardi Bras Fundraiser a Success

March 5, 2019 – Drinks, food, and a good time are a few ways to describe Mardi Bras at the Chuck Mathena Center. But the real purpose of the event is to help provide items for women and girls who’ve escaped domestic violence situations.

Donations of new bras and personal care items go to SAFE to help those in need. Director of SAFE, Alice Walker, says that the facility has served more than 1100 victims in the past year. SAFE also offers a place to stay for those in need. Walker says donations are accepted year round.

“A lot of times it’s really hard because we’re grant funded,” said Walker. She says that sometime there’s not enough left of the funds to go out and purchase items for those who may need it.

Lisa Clark with the Princeton Rotary Club says that it’s vital that women know they have a place to go. She says that women knowing they have an option, means they don’t have to stay in a violent situation.

Clark also says that most of the time victims leave in the middle of night, leaving their belongings home.

“When a woman leaves a violent situation she leaves with only what she’s wearing,” said Clark. The SAFE thrift shop, where the donations will go, allows women to pick out what they want for free.

Donations are accepted year round.

February 16, 2019 – Mardi Bras is a collection drive for new brassieres, underwear and personal-care items for women and girls who are homeless or residing temporarily in area women’s shelters due to domestic violence.

Many of these women, especially in domestic violence situations, have to leave their homes in the middle of the night, in a hurry, with just the clothes on their back.

Come for a relaxed social time, Mardi Gras-style beads, music and plenty of refreshments. One free drink ticket given for donations of women’s underwear, feminine products and/or cash donations during the event. A cash bar will also be available for additional beer, wine and soft drinks.

Donations can also be made prior to March 5 at the Chuck Mathena Center or at WVVA studios.
